NJ LAWS FOR BIKES, E-BIKES & SCOOTERS
Bikes, E-Bikes, Scooters & E-Scooters must follow Motor Vehicle Laws (NJ Title 39)
LAWS TO KNOW
- Travel with the direction of traffic.
- Do not ride on sidewalks or boardwalks (LB § 119-5).
- Helmets should always be worn, and MUST be if under 17.
- Class 3 E-Bikes (>20mph, >750watts or >50cc) must be registered & insured and you must be 15 years old with a valid moped license to ride. A helmet MUST be worn.
- Class 1 & 2 E-Bikes (<20mph, <750 watts or <50cc) have no age, license, registration or insurance requirements.
- E-bikes manufactured after January 1, 2019 must be tagged, showing classification, wattage and top speed.
- Passengers are ONLY allowed if the bike has a second seat and a place for the passenger’s feet.
IMPORTANT FACTS TO KNOW
- Motor vehicle tickets can be issued to riders. Some tickets carry a penalty of points which could lead to license suspension or prevent a minor from receiving their driver’s license.
- Class 3 E-Bikes can be impounded if unregistered/uninsured.
- Riders are AT FAULT if violating laws and involved in an accident with cars or pedestrians and may be issued a summons (with points) and/or be responsible for damages
